Born of Scottish parents and reared in the fine Scottish tradition of The Sunday Post with "Oor Wullie" and "The Broons", hogmany, parties with reels, jigs and pipes, 78 rmp records of Harry Lauder, Scottish Highland Festivals in Canada, meat pies, bridies and mushy peas.. but alas..
I have never been to Scotland, never seen the Edinburgh Tattoo or smelled the heather in the highlands and never wandered the streets of Bo'ness, my father's birthplace.. and ... I do not have a Clan.
But as my father so often said to me in the words of Rabbie Burns
"A man's a man for a' that."

My name is Thomas Ross SPOWART and I live in Welland, Ontario, Canada.

I started this site to search for my Scottish heritage and the origin of my family name. You will have to admit that it is not what you would call the typical Scottish sounding name, one that brings visions of hordes of Spowarts wearin' kilts and waving a claymore while following "Braveheart" into battle to the skirl 'o the pipes.  Alas.... I have yet to find a "MacSPOWART", although I have contacted more than six relatives in Scotland  and discovered the warmth and kindness of many others who have helped me on my quest, along with some interesting information about the origin of the name SPOWART

I have divided this site into six parts about my Scottish roots.  Follow them in order or jump around to suit your fancy.
